#FoodforthoughtCreativeQuarantine Hera artist, board member and past president, Barbara Pagh shares some cellphone photo editing experiments she has been making. At one of Hera’s first Food for Thought Saturdays, Uli showed us experiments she was doing using a Photoshop app on her cell phone. We uploaded it on our own phones, but I never used it. During this quarantine, I’ve been walking the dog as much as I can in different local wooded trails and I started photographing during the walks. For Earth Day I decide to use the app and posted one result on Facebook and Instagram. It’s kind of gimmicky, but I love the different shapes and patterns that emerge, so I am trying it with more of the images. There is also something soothing about the symmetry.

#FoodforThoughtCreativeQuarantine Today Hera Board member and past President, Barbara Pagh shares a video from her studio. I have been working on these collages of handmade paper that are memories of colors as I look out at the sky and water in Matunuck at different times of day and weather conditions. Compositionally they go back to my minimalist roots with straightforward horizontal bands of color and texture. I find these collages meditative to make and a necessary respite from the news.

#MeetHeraArtistBarbaraPagh Tell us your artist story, some biographical info, when did you decide to be an artist? Why do you make art? Where did you study? Etc. I didn’t have much art background before college though I always liked to make things. I didn’t seriously consider art until my sophomore year at Mount Holyoke College. I took a sculpture class with Leonard DeLonga and his teaching was an inspiration and made me see the world in a new way. I also studied printmaking with JoEllen Knight, became hooked on the process and subsequently pursued printmaking in graduate school at NYU.  What do you want people to walk away with after experiencing your work? Most of my prints are nature based, though they are abstracted. I want people to look at the natural world more closely after seeing my work. OPENING SATURDAY FROM 6-8PM! Alexandra Broches Letters and Pictures from a Box While closing her family home after her father died, Broches found a box containing more letters, photographs and documents than she had previously seen. Her father rarely spoke about the loss of his family and what had happened to this Dutch Jewish family during World War II. So began a project that continues today to construct the family narrative and reflect on the process undertaken to understand who she is and where she came from. The mysteries and memories within the box constitute the foundation of the photographs and personal reflections in this exhibition. Alexandra Broches is a fine art photographer. PAPER MAKING WORKSHOP FOR TWO  WITH BARBARA PAGH Have you ever seen beautiful handmade papers at a store and wondered how they were made.  Well, you can find out in a workshop with Barbara Pagh, who will not only teach you about the process of making paper but will also help you make your very own paper!  You will be doing the work shop at Barbaras home studio, and leave with a folio of handmade paper. The annual URI faculty exhibition is back! A perfect way to kick off the new academic year of creative innovation, both full time and adjunct faculty will be exhibiting their works to the public free of charge. The show is currently open at the URI Main Gallery, Fine Arts Center and will run to September 25, 2013.  The exhibition hours are Monday-Friday from 12:30 pm to 4 pm.   Lineations 1 Barbara Pagh Barbara Pagh is a printmaker and papermaker who is a Full Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at URI.  She has been a member of Hera Gallery in Wakefield, RI since 1985, serves on the Board of Directors and is currently President.  

Newport Mercury, Vol 256, No. 14 4/10/13 The Newport Mercury featured member Alexandra Broches in last week's issue to promote the Newport Art Museum's Newport Annual Members Juried Exhibition. Broches received honorable mention in the Newport Art Museum show that runs through May 19th. She was one of three Hera members to win accolades in the show. Elizabeth Lind earned First Place in the Three Dimensional category and Barbara Pagh earned an honorable mention for her piece in the Prints/Pastels/Drawings category.

Three Hera Gallery Members were recognized this month at Newport Annual Members' Juried Exhibition. The exhibit, on view until May 19th, 2013 " showcases new work by some of the region's brightest lights, rising stars and undiscovered talents". Juried this year by Virginia K. Freyermuth, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Art Edcuation at Rhode Island College, and painter-printmaker Nancy Frieses, Professor at Rhode Island School of Design . Gallery Talk and Q & A Wednesday, September 19th 3:30 to 4:30pm Please join us Wednesday, September 19th from 3:30 to 4:30pm for an informal gallery talk and Q & A by our current exhibiting artists, Myron Rubenstein and Barbara Pagh.  Myron Rubenstein,  Heads Up , Intaglio, 2010 Myron Rubenstein Myron previously worked as a graphic designer, and created art for years with traditional media, with a focus on canvas, oil and mixed media.  Over the last few years he has embraced his digital skills, searching for the convergence of traditional painting, photography and the virtual world of computing. Incorporating today’s technology with traditional painting on canvas has led to a very personal form of computer generated art. He has most recently shown in the Candita Clayton Gallery in Pawtucket, RI. Hera Gallery Barbara Pagh:  Coast to Coast September 8th – October 13th Opening Reception:  Saturday, September 8th, 6:00 – 8:00pm In this exhibition, Barbara Pagh will bring together a selection of work from several related series of prints. Landscape has been a dominant theme in her work for the past twenty years. There is no attempt to create a realistic representation of place, but a subjective impression based on structure and color and resulting in a layering of texture and form. Pagh often incorporates images of close textural details and natural objects. Although taken from a photograph, the resulting abstraction encourages the viewer to look at the landscape in a new way. The images come from beaches and rocky shores in Rhode Island, Hunting State Park in South Carolina and more recently the Pacific Northwest coast. Our member, Barbara Pagh is contributing to Travel+ . “Travel +” October 30- November 20 The Printmakers Network of Southern New England PNSNE, Travel Book Project is a three-book accordion collection of original prints and poetry created by fifteen members and three award winning poets. “Travel+” began as a concept to join artists and poets to select a subject over a period of time with creative results fused into a book collection in an edition of 30.
