Real to Reel documentary films on the theme of courage All films at 7pm Unitarian-Universalist Congregation of South County 27 North Road, Peace Dale, RI Organized by Iris Donnelly Freedom Summer (2014) Friday, September 19, 2014 Over 10 memorable weeks in 1964 known as Freedom Summer, 700 courageous student volunteers from around the country joined organizers and local African-Americans in a historic effort to shatter the foundation of white supremacy in Mississippi.   In 1964, less than 7 percent of Mississippi’s African-Americans were registered to vote, compared to 50 to 70 percent in other southern states.   When faced with possible loss of jobs and violence, many were dissuaded from registering to vote.

Hera Gallery member Myron Rubenstein will be exhibiting his work in the Ilgenfritz Gallery at the Newport Art Museum from August 31st to December 29th. This exhibition celebrates the 25 years since collaborative group "19 on Paper" was founded in 1986. They have been providing a "cohesive structure for the presentation of works on paper by Rhode Island artists." The group consists of 19 members- painters, collage artists, printmakers, photographers, bookmakers and sculptors- all contributing pieces that celebrate the diversity of works on paper.

Newport Mercury, Vol 256, No. 14 4/10/13 The Newport Mercury featured member Alexandra Broches in last week's issue to promote the Newport Art Museum's Newport Annual Members Juried Exhibition. Broches received honorable mention in the Newport Art Museum show that runs through May 19th. She was one of three Hera members to win accolades in the show. Elizabeth Lind earned First Place in the Three Dimensional category and Barbara Pagh earned an honorable mention for her piece in the Prints/Pastels/Drawings category.

Hera Gallery member, Mara Trachtenberg will have a solo exhibition at the Sarah Doyle Gallery entitled A Decadent World. The exhibit opens March 25th and runs until April 20th with an opening reception Thursday April 4th at 6:00pm.   See more of her work at:  www.maratrachtenberg.com  

H era Gallery Mem ber , Jill McL aughlin will be exhibiting in the "Expressive Matters" Art Show at the McGrath Judicial Complex, Wakefield, RI. Works by artists from Argentina, Rhode Island, Minnesota and Japan, will share the walls of the McGrath Judicial Complex, at 4800 Tower Hill Road in South Kingstown, from April 15 through December 13.  There will be an Opening Reception on Saturday, April 20, 2-5 PM.   All four award-winning artists live in Rhode Island . Born in Minnesota, Jill McLaughlin studied art and photography in Michigan before coming to live in Rhode Island thirty years ago. Inspired by memories, nature and her own inner stories, she uses vintage books, photographs and other objects to create collages that capture the magic in the ordinary.
