Small changes

Image
I got to the gallery today, and was greeted by some beautiful new blooms in our garden. Apparently, Alexandra has been getting her hands dirty and showing off her green thumb at the same time! It was a lovely surprise, and does a great job of cheering up the front of the gallery. Thanks, Alexandra!

New shows at the gallery

TROY WEST: NEW WORKS CLAUDIA FLYNN: RECLAMATION AUG 28 - OCT 2 OPENING RECEPTION: AUG 28, 6:00 - 8:00 Things have been nice and busy here at Hera, as both Troy West and Claudia Flynn have been installing their solo shows this week. As the gallery director, I'm the person who spends the most time 'living' in the exhibits... and I'm pretty excited to be spending the next six weeks inside these two shows. Claudia's show is installed beautifully, and is slightly reminiscent of a natural history museum in its layout. She's incorporated heavy gilt frames into her display, and done a nice job of creating constellations of works that really create a nice dialogue together. Troy's show is also laid out very well, with large sculptures breaking up the space into smaller spaces, allowing for the viewer to have a more intimate experience with the work. Troy uses writings and text in his pieces, and I'm glad to have an opportunity to spend some time with these tho...

Renovations at Hera Gallery, 327 Main Street

Image
On my second day has the summer intern, Islay took me over to the downtown Wakefield location, where we met Alexandra to check out the building. We found a vacant room with leaf covered floors and cob webbed corners. The back room was full of old paint cans and more debris. Part of the flooring where the front office once stood was missing! There was also a mysterious hole in the ground through which you could see piping and dirt. We sat around on the bench and discussed moving the furniture back into the space.  This seemed pre-emptive, given the state of the floor, but we needed to know the size of the replacement floorboards that were needed.  I had measured the furniture pieces and hastily jotted down my findings while still in the Lilypads office earlier. I struggled to keep track of my mildly illegible handwriting as we mentally rearranged the desks and bookcases.  I think that we finally decided on a way to fit everything we needed for the office. Then, it was on to the walls!...

Gallery cleanup images

Hera Gallery hosted a clean-up at our Main Street location, which we will be returning to shortly. Here are some images from that event, there are lots of smiles despite all the hard work that everyone put in...! gallery facade Part of the cleaning crew: Donna Gustavson, Jennifer Murray, and Barbara Pagh Donna weeding the front garden... quite the task! Barbara, she's either spackeling or scraping paint. Either way, I'm surprised she's smiling! Carl Dimitri, there's really nothing to say about a man with a rotary sander... except 'watch out!' Returning to MAIN STREET!

Image
We here at Hera Gallery are very excited to share with you the fact that the gallery will be moving back to our main street gallery location this spring! After more than 34 years of bringing art to Southern Rhode Island, Main Street has become our heart and our home. It has been two years since Hera has left our home on Main Street, and we have appreciated the support that we have received from our community during our time of 'homelessness.' Hera On The Road was a challenging and rewarding endeavour, which enabled us to form bonds with people and organizations that we wouldn't normally have the opportunity to work with. We have viewed this time as two years of being 'out of the box,' every aspect of our operation has had to be adapted to the challenge of being without a tangible gallery. Now that the date is set for our return to Main Street, May 1st, our plans are underway to get the building ready for exhibitions again. There has been some wear and tear be...
