OPENING SATURDAY FROM 6-8PM! Alexandra Broches Letters and Pictures from a Box While closing her family home after her father died, Broches found a box containing more letters, photographs and documents than she had previously seen. Her father rarely spoke about the loss of his family and what had happened to this Dutch Jewish family during World War II. So began a project that continues today to construct the family narrative and reflect on the process undertaken to understand who she is and where she came from. The mysteries and memories within the box constitute the foundation of the photographs and personal reflections in this exhibition. Alexandra Broches is a fine art photographer. Newport Mercury, Vol 256, No. 14 4/10/13 The Newport Mercury featured member Alexandra Broches in last week's issue to promote the Newport Art Museum's Newport Annual Members Juried Exhibition. Broches received honorable mention in the Newport Art Museum show that runs through May 19th. She was one of three Hera members to win accolades in the show. Elizabeth Lind earned First Place in the Three Dimensional category and Barbara Pagh earned an honorable mention for her piece in the Prints/Pastels/Drawings category.

Three Hera Gallery Members were recognized this month at Newport Annual Members' Juried Exhibition. The exhibit, on view until May 19th, 2013 " showcases new work by some of the region's brightest lights, rising stars and undiscovered talents". Juried this year by Virginia K. Freyermuth, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Art Edcuation at Rhode Island College, and painter-printmaker Nancy Frieses, Professor at Rhode Island School of Design . Altered Landscapes September 3 – October 14, 2010 Corridor Gallery, Fine Arts Center, URI This selection of color photographs is from the ongoing series Altered Landscapes with work dating from 2007 to the present. As a photographer of the landscape Broches explores our culture’s view of nature and the ways in which we occupy and alter our world. She writes: “The landscape as subject is traditionally viewed as picturesque. I approach and photograph the landscape as human construct. We ‘landscape’ and beautify our surroundings, preserve and protect our parks. We intervene and mold it, exploit and attempt to control and harness it, defy it, and neglect it. I value a sense of place, collective and individual memory, and identity in relation to the land. I’m interested in the domestic, private, and the ‘small’. My photographs document and report on ‘our’ sense of place. These images are amusing, ironic, and puzzling; some imply social and political consequences that are of immediate, if ...

I got to the gallery today, and was greeted by some beautiful new blooms in our garden. Apparently, Alexandra has been getting her hands dirty and showing off her green thumb at the same time! It was a lovely surprise, and does a great job of cheering up the front of the gallery. Thanks, Alexandra!
