New Member, Carl Dimitri

Image
Hera Gallery is pleased to be joined by new member, Carl Dimitri. Carl is an accomplished musician, writer, and artist. A Providence native, Dimitri moved to Los Angeles to pursue a passion for music in the 80's. After his time in California, he moved to England to return to school and study literature. In 2000, Carl returned to Rhode Island, where he taught, wrote, and worked. Shortly thereafter, painting became more than just a hobby. Carl Dimitri's work tends to be raw and expressionistic, encorporating satire. He is inspired by Duchamp, Rauschenberg, Van Gogh, Basquiat, Cezanne. Please keep an eye out on the Hera Gallery homepage for more examples of Carl Dimitri's work.

It's spring fundraising time, and this year we are planning a Paint-by-Numbers Lottery. Paint-by-numbers kits are a well-known icon that grew out of the democratic idea that anyone might paint a picture. Hera Gallery is very excited about this fundraiser; however, we need your help in order to make it possible. We strongly encourage you to donate your time and creativity to this event. This is a fantastic opportunity that will allow you to apply your chosen artistic medium in a new way, and will also allow you to sup...

As a long time maker, she will be using her membership at Hera to provide an opportunity to work with other members as well as to facilitate artistic projects that she has been planning for a while. We are very excited to have such an enthusiastic artist working with us! Please take a moment to view some images of her work below:

Young Artists and their Mentors

The first exhibition of John Kotulas series of exhibitions, Young Artists and their Mentors , just opened at the Meeting Room Gallery at Bagelz of Wakefield. The show featured the work of David Chatowsky, Dan McManus, Will Schaff, Lily Quinn, Scott Lapham, Miguel Rosario, Anthony Villavicencio, Roberto Bessin, Craig Crawford, Laura Katz, Kat Desrosiers, Alaniz Valladarez, and Courtney McDonald. In arts education there has been a resurgence of the notion that the classroom is not the only place to learn creative skills. More and more there is now an emphasis on personal connections between students and mentors as a way for the young person to grow and develop. This trend is described as “real world learning”, “community based training,” and/or “learning through internships.” Additionally, many young artists whose training is mainly based in schools rather than in their communities form student-mentor relationships that deeply influence their development as artists. In looking at yo...
