Cynthia Farnell plans two installations for Conway, SC

Artists and Hera Gallery member, Cynthia Farnell, is busy creating site specific photographic installations for Conway and Huntington Beach State Park. PRESENCE (CONWAY) and PRESENCE (ATALAYA) are the latest in Farnell's South Carolina series of site specific photographic installations. Both Projects will be on view this spring.

Farnell uses altered photographic images culled from public archives and her own collection. 'The series is a poetic interpretation of historical material,' she says. 'We are used to seeing photographs displayed in albums or frames. I like to dislodge them from their traditional format, alter them, and then present the results to the public in unexpected settings. I believe this process of dislocation and re-contextualization asks the viewer to consider the photographs in a new way. It is a study of how the meaning of an image can shift, depending on the context and who is doing the looking.'

PRESENCE (CONWAY) will be on view from Thursday, April 2 through Saturday, April 4, 2009. Viewing hours are from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily. A reception with the artist will be held on Thursday, April 2, from 5.m. until 7p.m.

PRESENCE (ATALAYA) will be on view from Monday, May 18 through Friday, May 22. Viewing hours are from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. daily. A reception with the artist will be held on Thursday, May 21, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.
