Karen Stackow at The World's Smallest Art Gallery

Image
Karen Stackow exhibiting in The World’s Smallest Art Gallery* through February 1, 2015.             Karen is showing a series of pyrographic works entitled Fire Spirits. She has created images with a wood burner on weathered shingles, cedar scraps, and rounds cut from downed trees on her property. Karen describes herself as a “daughter, friend and lover” of Mother Nature and these pieces form a heartfelt testament to that relationship. Karen sighted a mountain lion on her property and this event had great impact on her attunement with the natural world. Her portraits of animals and trees in The World’s Smallest Art Gallery reflect a deep appreciation of the spirit that lays beneath the surface. To look at them is to be reminded of the importance of the wild in our lives.             Karen has a long history as a community artist in Rhode Island...

Support Art in South Kingstown

Image
Dear Friends of Hera, It has been a good year at Hera Gallery. We are settled in our new home at 10 High Street, we have worked to have more of a community presence, we have begun to give back to our community, and we have continued to bring high quality contemporary art to our community. We are grateful for the support we receive from you, our Friends of Hera that make much of this work possible. In 2013 artist member John Kotula, along with other local artists had an idea to make birdhouses to raise homelessness awareness. We decided to turn this idea into a fundraiser and invite artists and other community members to create birdhouses that were auctioned off as a fundraiser for the Gallery, The Welcome House, The Johnnycake Center, and the Education Exchange. The community participation was wonderful resulting in over 70 unique birdhouses, and our decision to donate 10% of our future fundraising to local non-profits. Since then we have raised funds ...

CALLING ALL ARTISTS!

H E R A  G A L L E R Y Is pleased to present… WATER Juror: Dina Deitsch is Curator of Contemporary Art at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in  Lincoln, MA Concept: Water is the medium of life. We are born from water and remain mostly water until we return to dust. Water in dynamic cyclic flow forms 70% of the earth’s surface creating interconnected patterns of life in scaled interrelationships. Civilizations have flourished and evolved by harnessing the flow of water. Water has been essential for economic growth and has become a playground for fun and adventure.   We are inspired by the beauty and sublime nature of water. These days, contemporary water issues are also creating debates over conflicting interests at local and global levels. Concerns over enough clean drinking water, rising sea levels, powerful storms or droughts spurred by what most believe are climate change forces, fracking and energy needs, and transnationa...

Melyssa Lentini at The World's Smallest Art Gallery

Image
The World’s Smallest Art Gallery * is pleased to present the work of Melyssa Lentini through December 15, 2014.              Melyssa Lentini studied art at CCRI and UMass Dartmouth but then she took a fifteen-year hiatus from artwork. She has recently begun to work again and is turning out vibrant, eye-catching paintings and collages that seem equally influenced by Mexican Folk Art and 60’s psychedelia. Suppose Peter Max and Frieda Kahlo had a love child who grew up to be an artist, she might do work that looks a lot like Melyssa Lentini’s.   Actually, Melyssa relates that when she decided to start painting again, one of the first things she did was a replica of Peter Max’s The Different Drummer. She also names Frieda Kahlo as a major inspiration noting that she identifies with her struggles with health and relationships. Latin American religious iconography is dominant in the group of painti...

Introducing our new Intern: Rhonda LaPorte

Image
My name is Rhonda LaPorte and I am the newest intern at Hera Gallery.  I was born and raised in Rhode Island and currently reside in the beautiful town of Hopkinton.  I graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 1999, and worked in non-profit television and other non-profit organizations for a number of years.   My passion for photography began after receiving my first camera at the age of twelve.  After taking that first role of film, I was hooked and rarely went anywhere without my camera.  It is this passion for the medium that led me to return to the University of Rhode Island in 2011 to pursue my Bachelor of Fine Arts. Inspiration for my photographs come from the awe inspiring beauty of the natural world.  I am committed to capturing images that can provide the viewer an opportunity to witness a moment they did not experience themselves.  My work in this medium has me photographing through...

Paintings by Pop Icon will be on display in The World's Smallest Art Gallery through November 1, 2014. Pop Icon has worked in the arts for over 20 years. After attending The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College and classes at Rhode Island School of Design, he devoted his time to running an art group known as Pop Icon & The Cocktail Club and dedicated a lot of his time in the fight for free speech and equality. Pop's primary focus is on post modern art that draws from the banal and kitschy elements of Pop Art with a major emphasis on color and fun. Pop most recently has garnered international notoriety for his series of 8x9 paintings called Art pour le douloureusement ignorant; which consist of robots, skulls, voodoo symbols & musical instruments. Pop has shown in solo & group shows at The Warwick Art Museum, The Providence Art Club, The Main Gallery at The Art Institute of Boston, Gallery Z, Gallery Insane, The Brooklyn Coffee Tea House, Colo Col...
