The artwork at stake is Titian's work, Diana and Callisto. Cattrall, 53, who was born in Liverpool, is an admirer of the Venetian Renaissance painter’s work. She described seeing Diana and Actaeon as “being in the presence of a genius”.

In order to keep the painting form selling to a private European buyer, the actor has committed to posing nude for a recreation of a privately owned masterpiece, in order to raise money to enable the British government to buy the work.

Cattrall will pose nude for a recreation of Diana and Callisto, which shows the moment when the Roman goddess learns her maid has become pregnant by Jupiter. Last year she posed topless for a re-creation of its sister painting, Diana and Actaeon, which was bought for the National Galleries of Scotland and London after a public fundraising drive. This current rescue mission is viewed as an especially important venture, as it would keep the two Titian paintings, which were meant to hang together, from being separated.
pictured above: Diana and Callisto, 1559, Oil on canvas, 187 x 205 cm, National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh

Winters Artist and Farmers Market

Please support South Kingstown's brand new winter farmers' market. It is part of a series of exhibitions based on specific sites where an ancient culture left its' mark on the landscape.

In 2008 the artist traveled to Ireland as part of a sabbatical leave from the University of Rhode Island. Pagh visited sites including Newgrange, Knowth, Loughcrew and Carrowmore. These sites, built approximately 5,000 years ago, hold astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance. Many of the stones, both outside and inside the passage tombs, are carved with concentric circles, spirals and other geometric patterns. These symbols, found in many cultures and with their multiple interpretations, have been incorporated in Pagh's printmaking for the past 15 years.

When you enter the gallery you first see a series of cylinders, wrapped in wire and forming a graduated structure. Pagh's interpretive installation invites the viewer to enter a symbolic passage, created with suspended sheets of printed and sewn handmade paper. At the end of the corridor is a chamber filled with handmade paper bowls and objects. In a reference to the use and re-use of many of these sites, the artist has incorporated elements from previous exhibitions based on Scotland's stone circles and Native American petraglyphs and pottery. As you exit the chamber you can see an arrangement on the floor of handmade paper canoes, representing our life journey. The artist writes, "In Passages, I am not trying to recreate one of these sites, but use it as a stepping off point to represent the passage of time and create both a mysterious and meditative space."

The gallery hours are Monday-Saturday from 12-4. The work captures the unique sounds of the water and the creatures of Providence's canals and Narragansett Bay. Sounds are sampled from the water’s edge, and around and under the gondolas in the lagoons. This work was inspired by the effects of global warming on the environment, both under and above the surface of the water. According to the artist, her installation Aqua Alta, “echoes the ebb and flow of water on our planet. This project should be of particular interest to Rhode Island residents of the “Ocean State,” given how much recreational summer time is spent enjoying rivers, lakes, and oceans.

The intention of the Mobile Art Project is to bring contemporary art to communities in Southern Rhode Island where few or no formal art institutions currently exist. The Mobile Art Project also works to make contemporary art not only physically accessible to diverse populations but psychologically accessible as well. Providing art that ‘travels’ to homes and places of recreation for a diverse demographic, is a way to ‘bring art to the people’ rather than getting people to ‘come to’ the art. The Mobile Art Project will visit different neighborhoods in Rhode Island and will be parked outside locations such as community centers, libraries and other non-profits as well as block parties, ice cream stores, beaches, and farmer’s markets.

This program is presented with partial support from The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, The Puffin Foundation, Hera Educational Foundation, and The Friends of Hera. Hera Gallery is free and open to the public and is accessible to persons with disabilities.

Partner of the project: Save the Bay
Media partner: South County Independent

Special thanks: Judith Tolnick Champa, Rachel Calabro, Jeannette Jacobs, Jim Smart, Liberty Rentals, South County Tourism Council, South Kingstown Parks and Recreation Department, Peace Dale Neighborhood Association; Penske.

Upcoming exhibition at Courthouse Center for the Arts

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QgW4Um7hQ4E/Skzx2s_Jm1I/AAAAAAAAAYs/YEOEJgrX6Kw/s400/latinfly%5B3%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353919979127937874" />

The Sculptural Element

Here are some installation shots from the current exhibition, The Sculptural Element.
