The photographs were altered on the computer and became digital negatives that were then exposed onto light-sensitive lithographic plates and printed on a variety of thin Asian papers. I collage the images together in spaced intervals on a larger piece of abaca handmade paper. The Horizons series are collages of dyed handmade papers. Working mostly from memory, sometimes with a photographic reference, I arrange horizontal elements of sky, water, and sand in a minimal composition.”

Nicole Elyse Young: "Instinct/Dreaming of You/Lucy"

"This process for me has been enlightening and therapeutic. In a confusing and frustrating time, I was thankful for the opportunity to have a creative outlet. I thought a lot about what I like to draw and why. I find I have the most success when I sit down with a cup of coffee and no distractions. I gathered any materials I could find, including flashcards for paper and Tupperware lid as my pallet, and began to reflect on my subject matter. The more I made, the more I realized the materials are simply a device to explain my dreams in the physical world."
I always looked for a different style that no one discovered, but it is very hard to find your style. Pointillism, Data, Abstract, and more styles have been created in the past and I always wanted to create something different. Studying art made me realize that it takes years for artists to find their styles. Each day, I noticed that trying to find my art was becoming stressful to me. Therefore, I have stopped trying to look for style or come up with a new technique. I decided to keep crafting what I like to create."
Kathleen Trahan: "Romans 12:21"

"This three-paneled painting is a representation of Good compared to Evil in relation to the bible. The main center panel is my representation of the Garden of Eden which was the original struggle between good and evil. The main focus is the Tree of Knowledge and Wisdom; Adam and Eve ate from this tree, creating the original sin. The panel to the left is the stairway to heaven surrounded by clouds, sun rays, and the Holy Cross which represents heaven itself."
Jordan Rosa: "Party at Indiana Avenue"

"For years I've been interested in developing a piece that incorporates a majority of the original characters I have made over the course of my life as an artist. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so. To witness the culmination of my evolution as an artist within the span of 21 years all on one piece of paper, interacting and intermingling as if they were old friends is something that I've always been interested in making. Renoir's "Luncheon" reflects the kind of feeling that I want to evoke: a calm, jovial, and enjoyable setting that would be able to immerse whoever is viewing it, envisioning a scenario of themselves placed in a position similar to that."
Mae Pearson: "UNDULATION"

"My intention as an artist is to be competent across multiple mediums. Typically, I will choose paint to create work, which usually depicts elements of nature. One area of art that is ambiguous to me is a sculpture. I chose to combine the two in order to make faux wood out of the chipboard and explore the ways in which I can manipulate the pieces to create a path the eye can follow. Though the act of painting the chipboard, cutting up pieces, and adhering them to a larger canvas, I am able to use the process of exploration, hoping to create a tangible reflection of life's uncertainties and outcomes."
"For Matunuck Intervals I began in September by walking on the South Kingston town beach and Moonstone Beach on an almost daily basis, using my phone to photograph details of patterns in the sand, sand fences, rocks, piles of slipper shells, burlap bags that form a buffer for a house. Working mostly from memory, sometimes with a photographic reference, I arrange horizontal elements of sky, water, and sand in a minimal composition."

Siobhan Olsen: "Peeled Paint Close-up 1/Textured Close-up of Twine and Acrylic through Canvas

"My project series originally began as a series of canvases, much like one would paint on, that rested at a tabletop level and existed solely for the purpose of touching them and experiencing texture. My entire project revolves around texture, wanting the audience to experience the piece to the fullest potential as it is, an object on the same plane of existence as us. However, the spread of Coronavirus, leading to the quarantine, led to a change. Now it is a series of photographs, trying to evoke a curious nature. I wish to make people desire to touch what is being photographed. I want the texture to become a catalyst that makes people wish to touch beyond the photo itself."

"As an artist, I am heavily influenced by horror and human fear. I take inspiration from artists such as Junji Ito and Zdzislaw Beksinski, who create works utilizing dark subject matter and disturbing imagery. I am fascinated with an artist's ability to evoke fear. In horror films, fear is often built over an extended period of time with the use of lighting, audio, and plot. Jennifer Madriaga: "Winter at the Lake/Fall Fields/Summer at the Lake"

"For this project, I made six paintings about the earth and its habits- four small paintings and two large paintings using various amounts of color. The paintings focus on wildlife and nature. I plan on placing my paintings on a wall to create a three-dimensional effect that pops out to the audience. I will show the environment along with the animals to produce a calm and serene feeling."
Alex Grey: "The Lake Compounce Story"

"My goal as an artist is to practice enough to become a talented storyboard artist. I always loved watching cartoons and movies since I was a kid, and I never grew out of watching them. I feel that focusing my talents on becoming a storyboard artist for television or film. While I do like to create my own works, I would feel a lot safer working for a company and getting a weekly paycheck rather than working solo."
Chyna Dougherty: "The future can be pretty neat, but so can the past, so let's keep looking up."

"This collection was designed to take the viewer out of their space or the current physical space that they are in, and bring them into a new landscape. The large canvases themselves allude to differing sensations in the viewer. Though there is a somewhat clear idea of what these landscapes are, they are meant to bring memories upon the viewers. The viewer is meant to perceive the pieces as they please while being reminded of different feelings, places they have visited, or even if the work reminds them of a person."
Daniela Del Portillo: "Lotería (La Flor, El Ojo, La Diabla, La Fruta and El Corazón)"

"These pieces are my take on Lotería cards, a typical Mexican game resembling bingo, my childhood favorite. I acknowledge that my culture is not fully Mexican anymore, at this point I have spent more years in the United States than in Mexico. However, I will also never be fully American, I am a wonderful mix of the two. I carry the blood of my indigenous ancestors and the rich history of my native country but also an off-beat style and interests that my grandparents would never approve of."
Trevor Baynard: "The Stage"

"The Stage is a piece centered around evoking a visceral feeling in the viewer. The thought of being on a stage can make people react in different ways; it can be intimidating, enjoyable, petrifying, and even exciting. Even the mere sight of a stage entrance can stir these feelings, albeit not in everybody. This rendering offers a view out over the dunes and a view through a stage with its audience. Where do you see yourself?"
Camille Audette: "New Canvas/Weighted Blanket"

"The quilt I've made is sewn out of garments that I've worn; slept, worked, sweat, and cried in. Areas of fabric become primed and stiff once they are covered with layers of gesso. The quilt is a tangible result of the patriarchal burdens we bear as people. What would the world look like if women dictated it? What would the art industry look like if women's experiences had not been marginalized since the beginning of time?"
I have never painted a box before or anything that wasn't a 2-D canvas, so this was new territory. To paint it and use only my imagination to fill up the blank sides was a fun type of struggle. My goal was to make a box that could take you anywhere your imagination would let you go and I know that is what I have here."

My name is Olivia Urciuoli, the summer intern at Hera Gallery and I will be running the blog for the rest of the summer, so I felt I should introduce myself!

My entire life I have had an interest in art, but never found myself pursuing an artistic career. The same goes for music, fashion and environmental science. I never took the route of being a musician or getting a degree in fashion or environmental science, but I always felt I resonated with the individuals who took on these incredible, meticulous studies. The reason I say this is because even though I didn't feel I would succeed in these fields, I decided to study public relations. I am able to work for non-profits like Hera Gallery because in PR, I am able to incorporate ideas, put my writing skills to the test and contribute to an organization I'm genuinely interested in.

What I hope to achieve in writing for Hera Gallery's blog and in my overall internship experience, is to understand the art world from inside! I have already been able to achieve this by getting an extensive look into the URI Exhibition, which I will be posting about in upcoming weeks!

I'm excited to have this opportunity with Hera Gallery and hope the audience is open to what I provide for the team!

Thank you all for listening and being a part of this community! I hope you all, along with your friends and families, are safe and healthy during these challenging times.

Best,
Olivia Urciuoli
For the Department of Art & Art History at URI, the Senior Seminar class represents the capstone course for those approaching their hard-earned BFA degrees. Students arrive with a diverse set of skills in various media, and work towards a final group exhibition, which has been an annual event at Hera Gallery for quite a few years. Mid-semester, plans for physical installation at the gallery were halted, students’ projects were temporarily abandoned on campus, and students were sent home, wondering how we would continue.

During our many online video meetings, the group decided the best way to move forward was to create an exhibition catalogue, where the written thoughts, the documentation of the work, and the spirit of this collaboration could be shared among our audience. Our friends, family, faculty, artists, and peers can now experience the journey this Senior Seminar Class of Spring 2020 embarked on during these uncertain times. The exhibition catalogue can be viewed online, in digital form, and the physical book can be ordered at cost, and mailed directly.

As artists, the work we make in the studio is a crucial part of our practice. The creative process is always tossing out roadblocks - in the material, the research, the content, and the conditions in which we make our work. Where we exhibit the work is also a critical element to an artistic practice. This year, our students were faced with various setbacks in many areas of the process. Through the production of this catalogue, collaboration, and improvisation, our class emerged with an indelible lesson on maximizing potentials to arrive at unforseen success.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Within the first month of the current crisis, I was reading how it was important to document the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">time we are in for historians. With being at home, conducting school at home, and working, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">there has not been much time to use my hands for my art practice, much less write. As an artist <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I need to keep my hands moving to feel ok or I get agitated. In times of stress, I often write <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">haikus to settle my mind.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Traditional haiku references nature and specifics to the season, drawing out a view of the inner <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">self by being reflective upon a moment. I think of the crisis of COVID19 as a temporary season <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">itself. I found a small notebook and set some limitations to begin writing a poem a day. I find <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">limitations in mediums to be freeing. You have to work against them to express your idea and <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">that can lead to greater creativity. In my fiber based sculpture work, I take a material and study <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">it until its form speaks to me. If I can’t make as much with my hands, I still have my mind and <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">can use my hands to write.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I further set my limitations to writing about my garden and its changes, objects within my house <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">and living with a young child. It's a way of utilizing the limitation to bring a sense of control and <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">inner calm to my little sphere at the moment. With this intense focus, and using my hand to write <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">out the poems, edit, erase and be off the computer, has been freeing. All are posted to <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Instagram @rsiemering daily with a short explanation of the origin of the moment.

At one of Hera’s first Food for Thought Saturdays, Uli showed us experiments she was doing using a Photoshop app on her cell phone. We uploaded it on our own phones, but I never used it. During this quarantine, I’ve been walking the dog as much as I can in different local wooded trails and I started photographing during the walks. For Earth Day I decide to use the app and posted one result on Facebook and Instagram. It’s kind of gimmicky, but I love the different shapes and patterns that emerge, so I am trying it with more of the images. There is also something soothing about the symmetry.

An offering from Hera Board member Wendy Wahl

Today this video arrived in my email at just the right moment to lift my spirits during these challenging times. It was forwarded to me from one of my dearest friends and
amazing artist Rene Stawicki. We met at Hera Educational Foundation and Gallery in the 1990’s and it’s a relationship that I treasure. We don’t know who to credit this
awesome work but I’m delighted to share it in the hopes that it brings you joy through laughter and/or tears.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My exhibit titled Gates of Heaven and Other Stories opened at Hera Gallery on March 7th and was scheduled to be up until April 4th. Well… life is what happens while you’re making other plans. Of course, the gallery had to close well before April 4th. On the other hand the show is still on the walls, because subsequent events were also put on hold and it is unclear when things will get back to normal and Hera’s always excellent programing will get going again. It maybe that my show and its companion exhibition, Chad Amos Self’s WE TIED HOTDOGS TO STRINGS AND MARVELED AT OUR DISCOVERIES: FINDING FORMS IN LOCAL WATERS, will stay up until Hera reopens, allowing some time for things to get reorganized. Perhaps there will be a public event to celebrate Hera being back in business!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In the meantime, I want to present this blog entry as an alternative means of sharing the writing and art from the exhibition. The show consists of three installations. The central component of each is the text of a story I’ve written. The stories are accompanied by artwork intended to amplify and deepen the experience of reading the story. The art doesn’t function as a traditional illustration, conveying visually events or characters that the story describes in words. However, the hope is that the combination of words and images will create a third thing; an enhanced tale.

VIRTUAL LEARNING: CAN WE DO IT?

Transitioning to virtual learning this semester has been an incredible undertaking for

both instructors and students. Teachers who never needed to be tech savvy have had to spend

hours in virtual training, and watching webinars on how to effectively run classes online. Some

teachers have it harder than others. How are ceramicists, or printmakers expected to create

virtually without the proper tools? In many ways I count myself lucky that in drawing and painting

our materials are relatively easy to transport and work with in a variety of settings.

If teachers are struggling with online platforms students have been asked to do

something more difficult: navigate whatever material their teacher has managed to throw

together. One student confided in me that he had classes on Zoom, Blackboard Collaborate and

Webex. He had five different ways of submitting work, and five different ways each teacher

presented material, meaning he sometimes spends hours digging through a teachers virtual set

up trying to find a project.

We are also all thrown out of our teaching and learning element. Normally students have access to a classroom outfitted with easels, open studio hours, computer labs and libraries.

Now some students are sharing a computer with two or three siblings, or with parents who are working from home. They share bedrooms and homes with siblings, friends or roommates and

have no quiet or separate space in which to focus, spread out or work. Some students have apologized to me for missing lectures or being late handing in work because they have family members in the hospital. Other students work in healthcare or grocery stores and are pulling extra shifts.

interesting documentation to occur. Some students were able to finish drawings or paintings
